Moremi Game Reserve is one of the most
renowned safari destinations in Africa offering an enthralling Botswana
safari experience. It is a national park located at the eastern portion of
the Okavango Delta and south west of the Chobe National Park. It covers
4872 sq kilometres or 1856 sq miles of the Okavango delta. This Africa
safari park in Botswana covers one third of the eastern and central
portion of the Okavango Delta with intermixed waterways and dry areas
creating an environment that brings in diversity of wildlife. The
topography is a combination of forests and savannas; as well as
floodplains and lagoons.
In the early part of 1960, the governing tribal
leader of the area i.e. Mrs Moremi, the widow of Chief Moremi created a
game reserve in her vast land to protect the rich wildlife from
destructive game hunting and human/cattle encroachment that was
continuously increasing threatening wildlife in the area later leading it
to become an official Botswana safari national park. The BaTawana tribe
under the leadership of Mrs Moremi declared the area a wildlife reserve, a
first African tribe declared conservation area that became official in
March 15, 1963 and named Moremi Game Reserve. Today, It made it as one of
the most sought Africa safari destination.
In addition, the reserve was named Moremi in
deference to Chief Moremi of the BaTawana tribe. The Fauna Conservation
Society ran the Moremi Game Reserve during its early years until 1976 when
it included the Chief’s Island in its coverage. In 1979, the Botswana
Department of Wildlife and National Parks took over the management of the
reserve and have now added other diverse areas of the Okavango Delta
extending the park border lines.
