OVERVIEW ON CHITABE LEDIBA CAMP IN OKAVANGO DELTA

Chitabe Lediba is located on the other side of the same island as its sister, Chitabe Camp. A smaller camp, accommodation consists of five canvas tented-style rooms, built on raised decks with luxurious interiors and in tasteful style, complete with en-suite bathrooms, including double vanity basins, indoor and outdoor shower with spectacular views. There are two family rooms, one (for older children) with an adjoining front deck and the other (for youngsters) with an adjoining corridor; each room however has its own en-suite facilities. A dining area, lounge and pool have glorious views over the surrounding floodplains and the small lediba (remnant lagoon waterhole), where a variety of game comes to drink during the day. Wildlife viewing is the major activity at this camp, whether on walks, or day and night game drives in open 4×4 land rovers accompanied by an experienced guide.

Location Of Chitabe Lediba Camp

The Chitabe Concession protects 28,000 hectares of pristine Okavango Delta wilderness. It borders the renowned Moremi Game Reserve and is nestled between two key river systems, the Gomoti to the east and the Santantadibe to the west. Chitabe Concession in the Okavango Delta harbors such a variety of habitats in close proximity, ranging from definitive Okavango Delta scenery with Illala palms dotting floodplains to open savannah and acacia woodlands. A finger of continuing swamps inundated by water throughout the year extends into the Chitabe Concession and the region is also dominated by seasonally flooded areas which changes 56% of the concession from dry floodplains into a lush oasis, when the annual flood waters amble through. All this gives rise to a amazing variety of species, which allows Chitabe Lediba Camp to offer guests a wide range of luxury African safaris, game viewing and birding experiences. The high numbers of impala in the area means that leopard are often seen near Chitabe Lediba Camp. Also encountered are buffalo, elephant, lion and occasional sightings of wild dog, the subject of the Botswana Wild Dog Research Project that takes place in the region. The birdlife is exceptional and contrasts throughout the year, depending on water levels and season. Raptors are copious here: including the African Hawk Eagle and the Hooded Vulture often nests on the island. Game experiences in the palm-filled scenery of Chitabe often produce families of Ground Hornbill, Greater Honeyguide, Gabar Goshawk, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, Red-billed Hornbill, and coveys of Red-billed Francolin.

The area is a combination of open grassland, acacia-forest and shallow waterways. Game viewing is varied from the lush green period after the rains to the dry winter months when plains game numbers peak. Buffalo, elephant, lion, warthog, kudu, hippo, giraffe, leopard, cheetah, tsessebe are found throughout the year. Wild dog are frequently seen in the concession.

Activities At Chitabe Lediba Camp

  • Land game drives in open 4×4 Land Rovers – the camp has 2x 10-seater Land Rovers, each accommodating a maximum of 7 guests so that each guest is afforded an outside seat.
  • The camp has a supply of bean bags for guests to use to steady their camera while on a game activity.
  • Day and night drives.
  • Walking safaris are offered from camp on request.
  • Raised platform hides, one within walking distance from the camp (accessibility dependent on water levels)
